Cultural Immersion Healthcare Experience
by Kyle Stewart
-March 10th to March 15th -
Students of the Rural Health Scholars program from Southern Utah University and Dixie State University departed from Cedar City, UT to go to the Four Corners area to provide service, gain experience and learn more about the rural cities in the Four Corners area.
These students all signed up to spend Spring Break in Blanding, UT and surrounding areas. Each student with their own desires, goals, and passions were assigned different healthcare professionals to shadow and healthcare facilities to serve in. Each student would spend the next 5 days splitting up and serving in their perspective positions. Each night, the group of students got together and learned more about the surrounding area and its unique culture. A few select students with more specific career goals were able to spend their days serving and shadowing professionals that were separate from the others (Physical Therapy and Optometry). Each student learned more about ways to serve, aid, and run a practice for their future careers.
This project was done by Kyle Stewart who spent his daily hours with Dr. Kirk, a local Optometrist. Kyle was able to sit in on 60+ appointments and view the different aspects of an Optometry office. The goal of this project was to further solidify desires to apply to Optometry, and these goals were met.
